VimpelCom partners with Google for tailored Google Play content

VimpelCom, a provider of telecommunications services, has joined forces with technology giant Google to allow its customers to use their mobile accounts to find, try and buy tailored Google Play content.

The association will simplify the process of app purchase on Google Play. The cost of any purchased app will be deducted from a VimpelCom’s prepaid credit or just added to their monthly bill.

“The collaboration with Google will provide our customers around the world with a convenient way to access and pay for millions of apps, games and songs, significantly enhancing the smartphone experience in countries where banking and credit card services are not widely used,” said Mikhail Gerchuk, group chief commercial officer of VimpelCom.

The partnership will create a dedicated “VimpelCom Channel” through which VimpelCom customers can easily choose from the 600,000 apps available in the Google Play store.

The VimpelCom Channel and mobile account payments for the Google Play store will be rolled out in VimpelCom’s operations across the globe, starting later on this year.

The VimpelCom channel is available via the local Google Play store. The channel will feature dozens of apps, tailored to offer local content and services.

The Google Play store brings together Google digital goods including apps, games, Google Books, Google Music and Google Movies into a single unified offering.

The company affirms that this agreement is part of VimpelCom’s consistent strategy of providing its customers with the best mobile internet experience.

This agreement also complements the company’s recently announced partnership with Opera Software.

A few months back, VimpelCom deployed Ciena’s 6500 Packet-Optical Platform in its backbone network in Russia.
