Infotech Lead America: Ruckus Wireless has introduced a Wi-Fi technology that secures open Wi-Fi communications by automatically configuring each device in a Wi-Fi network, even in open hotspots.
The technology, called ‘Secure Hotspot’ does not require to be configured manually. It is based on Ruckus patented Dynamic Pre-Shared Key (Dynamic PSK). Enterpises can use a unique pre shared key to get secured encrypted access to public network Wi-Fi services.
Traditional Wi-Fi systems face a number of challenges when it comes to supporting thousands of simultaneous users in a confined space such as a stadium. Ruckus Smart Wi-Fi solutions were designed to meet the demanding access and security requirements of the different Wi-Fi networks used in large, public venues, such as those for point-of-sale (POS), ticketing, business management systems, guest and contractors, special events and internet and walled garden access for fans.
An industry report from the Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA) and Informa Telecoms & Media reveals that the number of public hotspots worldwide is expected to grow more than twice from 2.1 million in 2012 to nearly 6 million in 2015. The surge in hotspot traffic brings a host of security concerns with it, such as identity theft, fraud and other criminal activities that become possible through access to unencrypted confidential information.
Ruckus’ Secure Hotspot gives users an option to establish a protected connection when the user connects to an open Wi-Fi network. If the user chooses to secure the connection, the Ruckus ZoneDirector WLAN controller automatically generates a unique, 63-character pre-shared key that is bound to that specific user’s device.
Ruckus Zero IT Activation capabilities combine the pre-shared key with the requisite Wi-Fi configuration setting and this gets installed within the user’s device through a small, temporary applet. This system eliminates the need for users to select or enter any wireless configuration information to use a Wi-Fi network.
Network access is deactivated when a user leaves. New keys can be generated when required and the technology is configurable per wireless LAN.
Some of the latest users of Ruckus’ latest technology are UCOPIA Communications, Salt Lake City’s Rio Tinto stadium, DeVos Place – a premier convention center and the Kansas City Convention Center. Earlier this month, Telecom NZ selected Ruckus Wireless’ technology to transform its conventional payphones into outdoor Wi-Fi hotspots.
The Secure Hotspot technology is a no-cost software capability within the Ruckus ZoneFlex software suite that operates on Ruckus ZoneDirector WLAN controllers. It is currently available for use.
