Storage market revenue up 13.7% to $13.6 bn: IDC

Storage market Q4 2017Eric Sheppard, research vice president with IDC’s Enterprise Infrastructure team, said shift towards server-based storage, expansion within public cloud datacenters and infrastructure refresh are creating demand for storage systems.

IDC said enterprise storage systems revenue grew 13.7 percent to $13.6 billion and storage shipments rose 39.3 percent to 89.2 exabytes in Q4 2017.

Original design manufacturers (ODMs) that sell storage directly to hyperscale datacenters increased 34.3 percent to $2.8 billion.

External storage systems rose 1.8 percent to $6.6 billion.

HPE has 18.9 percent share in enterprise storage systems market.

Dell has 18 percent of enterprise storage systems market.

IBM has 5.5 percent share in the global enterprise storage systems market.

NetApp has 5.4 percent market share in enterprise storage systems space.

Huawei has 3.8 percent share in enterprise storage systems market.

Hitachi has 3.3 percent market share in enterprise storage systems market.

As a single group, storage systems sales by original design manufacturers (ODMs) selling directly to hyperscale datacenter customers accounted for 20.4 percent of global spending during the quarter.

Dell Inc. has 26.6 percent share in external enterprise storage systems space.

HPE has 12.24 percent share share in external enterprise storage systems market during the quarter.

NetApp has 11.2 percent share of the share in external enterprise storage systems market.

IBM has 10.9 percent market share in share in external enterprise storage systems space, said IDC.

Hitachi has 6.8 percent market share in share in external enterprise storage systems market.

The All Flash Array (AFA) market rose 15.1 percent to $1.9 billion. The Hybrid Flash Array (HFA) segment of the market grew 7.4 percent to $2.7 billion in revenue.
