HP leads Indian PC, laptop market in Q3, ahead of Lenovo, Dell: Gartner

HP is leading the Indian PC market by doubling its market share in the country, as it accounted for 32.5 percent of PC shipments in the third quarter of 2013. HP is head of Lenovo and Dell.

Lenovo is in the number two position which lost market share to 13.7 percent in Q3 2013 from 17 percent in Q3 2012.

The third largest PC vendor is Dell with 11.8 percent market share. Acer and HCL are in the fourth and fifth positions.

The combined desk-based and mobile PC market in India rose 7.9 percent to around 3.2 million units in the third quarter of 2013 over the third quarter of 2012, said Gartner.

Some large government orders were the growth drivers.

Consumers accounted for 40 percent of total PC sales in the third quarter of 2013 compared to 47 percent in the third quarter of 2012.

Vishal Tripathi, principal research analyst at Gartner, said: “This emphasises the fact that despite the festive season and availability of various end user schemes on PCs, the market was impacted by high inflation, global economic uncertainty and limited share of wallet as consumers preferred to spend on other consumer durables.”

White boxes (including parallel imports), which accounted for 40 percent of the overall desktop market, declined 26 percent in the third quarter of 2013 compared to the same period last year. Mobile PCs, with a 22 percent year on year increase, helped drive overall market growth.
