Senior officials at Oracle say that the company does not consider SAP and Sybase as its major competitors. At a press meet in Delhi on Tuesday, Oracle tried to emphasize that Oracle Database 12c is much superior to SAP and Sybase products currently available.

Oracle Database 12c architecture enables CIOs to manage many databases as one – without changing their applications.

The enterprise IT major also announced new database-to-storage system capabilities for customers using Oracle Database 12c with Oracle’s Sun ZFS Storage Appliance and Pillar Axiomstorage systems.

Oracle India VP – Technology Business Sheshagiri Anegondi said the new capabilities enable Oracle Database users to optimize database performance, streamline storage configuration and provisioning, and quickly create new development and test environments.

By plugging into cloud with Oracle Database 12c, customers can improve quality and performance of applications, save time with maximum availability architecture and storage management and simplify database consolidation by managing hundreds of databases as one.

Oracle Database 12c introduces 500 additional features and is the result of 2,500 person-years of development and 1.2 million hours of testing, plus an extensive beta program with Oracle’s customers and partners.

The company says that during the beta run in India, several enterprise CIOs expressed confidence in the new database. The company will start selling Oracle Database 12c soon.

Since there’s no substantial hardware cost attached when enterprise CIOs migrate to Oracle Database 12c, there will be strong demand in India as well.

Oracle Database 12c can benefit customers deploying private database clouds and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) vendors looking for the power of Oracle Database in a secure multitenant model.

Oracle India VP – Systems Business Venkatesh Krishnan said through the combination of Oracle Storage and Oracle Database 12c, customers can reap the benefits of software and hardware that is deployed, upgraded, managed and supported together.

Oracle Database 12c will enable the database to communicate directly with the Sun ZFS Storage Appliance and deliver 65 percent reduction in administration.

Oracle Intelligent Storage Protocol (OISP) will allow select future Oracle storage product releases to highly optimize configurations, accelerate provisioning, and auto-tune storage systems for increased performance, Oracle said on Tuesday.

Oracle’s Sun ZFS Storage Appliances and Pillar Axiom storage systems are the only NAS and SAN storage that support Oracle Hybrid Columnar Compression, an Oracle Database-specific feature that typically compresses historical data by 12x, and improves query performance an average of 5x.
