Hayato Koeda of A10 Networks on cloud trends and opportunities

Enterprise IT has thrived in the era of cloud; however, cloud deployment and operations have never been easier for cloud providers. Optimization of cloud resources has been one of the major challenges for cloud service providers.

Cloud services allow customers to take advantage of the unlimited computing resources in the cloud, but there is the risk for cloud service providers to own extra facilities whose operation rates are low because  they  have  to keep  the  infrastructure  to  provide  high  performance  and  to prepare for sudden spikes, with limited resources and budgets to maintain datacenters.

The need for cloud infrastructure optimizaiton has led to the emergence of concepts like “Cloud bursting,” said Hayato Koeda, president & CEO, K.K and vice president of South APAC at A10 Networks, in an exclusive interaction with Infotech Lead.

In cloud bursting, solutions are seamlessly integrated and can be provided in optimal form factors. For example, customers can use hardware solutions under ordinary  circumstances  and  start  to  use  software  solutions  in  the  cloud  at  a low  cost  only during peak demand.

CIOs seek to fulfil increasing computing demands as enterprises move IT resources to the Cloud for operational efficiency, increased internal IT agility and reduced total cost of ownership (TCO).

Advantages with best-of-breed internal deployments are often lost when deploying in the Cloud, which leads to a critical requirement for advanced Application Delivery Controllers (ADCs) to accelerate and secure applications and networks in the Cloud environment, Koeda said.

A10 Networks is on a mission to provide networking and security solutions that help organizations accelerate, optimize and secure their applications.  The company offers comprehensive application delivery solutions for the Cloud with a choice of various form factors including software ADCs, hardware appliances, and a cloud-based service which enables flexible deployment in any environment and an elastic pay-as-you-grow licensing model, he added.

Cloud also contributes to increasing security threats including risks of external attacks and risks in multi-tenant environments.

Even with defense systems implemented at Cloud Service Providers to protect subscribers’ data and resources, there exists the risk of security breaches because recent security attacks are growing in both complexity and persistence, and there is not a single perfect solution that can prevent all types of attacks. In the case of public Cloud services, in particular, the responsibilities of Cloud Service Providers and subscribers are not clearly stated, which creates more risk in access control, ID management, etc. because vulnerabilities can be missed by both parties, Koeda said.

Multi-tenant  technology is commonly used in Cloud environments to provide services to multiple subscribers on a single platform. However, it can cause additional security risks when the isolation between virtual machines or partitions is not strong, and the resource is shared with other subscribers who may not have taken necessary security measures, or even have malicious motives to attack other users who share the platform.

Cloud has no boundaries, and it has solutions to support the needs of all industry verticals. A10, however, has seen strong demands for ADCs from Cloud Service Providers, datacenters, telecommunications providers and the like. Because they operate large-scale datacenter facilities and have a desire to create an infrastructure that offers premium feature sets to customers as a service, while reducing costs.

A10’s cloud platform includes RBM (Rental Billing Model) and UBM (Utility Billing Model) licensing models, which enables Cloud Service Providers to create an elastic “pay-as-you-grow” environment and billing infrastructure for Cloud Service Providers.

SoftAX is one of the key components of a Cloud, and is a software-based ADC that delivers the industry’s highest performance with up to8 Gbps of throughput.

The beauty of cloud lies in the “pay-as-you-grow” billing model, which lowers the initial cost and offers the flexibility to scale up and scale down as necessary. Therefore, CIOs should review the service level periodically and ensure that they are on the right rate plan, Koeda concluded.
