CSC buys big data platform firm Infochimps
CSC has acquired big data platform-as-a-service provider Infochimps for an undisclosed amount.
Infochimps, based in Austin, Texas and with an office in Redwood City, California, targets enterprise businesses.
CSC on Thursday said Infochimps’ big data and analytics professionals will enable CSC to quickly scale its big data business and offering customers as-a-service access to advanced data analytics.
Research firm IDC says big data market revenue will grow at 31.7 percent a year to reach $23.8 billion in 2016.
“Infochimps’ expertise in building industrial-strength data platforms on open source technologies will advance CSC’s big data capabilities significantly,” said Sashi Reddi, vice president and general manager for Big Data and Analytics at CSC.
“The joint CSC-Infochimps capabilities give our customers the ability to provision their analytic platform, point their data streams and deliver new industry insights,” said Dan Hushon, chief technology officer, CSC.
Infochimps will have access to CSC’s industrialized global sales, marketing, delivery and solution development teams.
This is CSC’s second acquisition in the big data space.
Several global IT companies are active in the big data market. For instance, Blue Coat Systems will acquire Solera Networks, a provider of big data security intelligence and analytics. Blue Coat will benefit from the Solera DeepSee platform that will add security analytics and forensic capabilities to Coat product portfolio.
Nice Systems will acquire Causata, a provider of real-time Big Data analytics technology. The addition of Causata solutions will strengthen Nice’s strategies to offer better visibility into a customer’s activities on the Web and utilize insights from real time data.
Big Data is yet to generate strategic value to majority of CIOs at enterprises, according to a Cisco survey. The survey said 28 percent of enterprises surveyed are currently generating strategic value from their data. 60 percent says that Big Data will help improve decision making and increase their competitiveness.
